Dreams of more than 43,000 Filipinos to work overseas were dashed by the Philippine Bureau of Immigration during the first year of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration. The policy is part of country’s drive to offload suspected undocumented potential overseas workers.According to a Philippine Star report, from July 2016 to June this year, the Bureau of Immigration has offloaded a record number of 43,233 Filipino ‘expat hopefuls’. Many of them have been found to be ‘tourist workers’ – the term used for undocumented OFWs.The same report quoted BI Port Operations Division chief Marc Red Mariñas who said that 502 of the passengers were suspected to be trafficking victims.A total of 90 per cent of the offloaded passengers were screened at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the country’s main airport.
